3. Is it possible to reserve a grave for myself and/or my spouse/ family etc?
Reservations are only made for surviving spouses.
4. What can I do to prepare for when I or someone else will pass away?
When the time comes, the family will need to share a lot of information with us in order to fill out the death certificate. To make that processes easier, one can fill out this document and keep it handy and give to a loved one to hold on to until the time comes. At that time, they should call the Rodfeh Zedek Hotline (718-550-1818) and begin making arrangements.
5. Where will I be buried?
Rodfeh Zedek has two active burial grounds: United Hebrew Cemetery in Staten Island, NY and Beth Abraham Cemetery in East Brunswick, NJ.
Individuals born prior to January 1st, 1960 are able to choose which cemetery they would like to be buried in. Individuals born after January 1st, 1960 are buried in Beth Abraham Cemetery in East Brunswick, NJ.
6. Are there any exceptions to the 1960 rule?
For couples in which one spouse was born before 1/1/1960 and the other after, if the spouse born before 1/1/1960 passes away first, the surviving spouse may be buried in Staten Island if a reservation to be buried next to the predeceased spouse is made.
If the spouse born after 1/1/1960 passes away first, they will be buried in Beth Abraham Cemetery and the surviving spouse can choose to reserve next to their spouse or be buried in Staten Island since they are born before 1/1/1960.
7. What do I do if someone passes away on Shabbat or Yom Tob?
Following Syrian Community custom, Congregation Rodfeh Zedek performs burials on the second day of Yom Tob. If someone passes away on Shabbat or the first day of Yom Tob, they are not buried that day, they are buried the following day.
If someone passes away on Shabbat or the first day of a Yom Tob, the Hebra Kadisha (Holy Burial Society) will not pick up the deceased until the conclusion of Shabbat or the end of the first day of Yom Tob. At the conclusion of Shabbat or the first day of Yom Tob, the family should call the Rodfeh Zedek Hotline (718-550-1818) and begin making arrangements for burial the following day.
Please consult your local Rabbi for further guidance.
